What is it?

Can anyone identify this mushroom? I cant seem to find it listed in the Audubon. Not quite sure what it is.

Morel Mushrooms

black-morelsIts warm outside and things are starting to bud out which can mean only one thing, Morels aren’t too far away in our future. Reports of finds are already coming in from Alabama and Georgia. Soil temps here in Tennessee are in the mid 50s range which is conducive to morel fruiting. This year we are encouraging everyone to take picture of your morel hunts, video and record your finds. You can post those images videos and finds to our website or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. Videos submitted will be included in one of our videos which will be done later in the year.

Tennessee- Morgan County's Largest Morel

0425111652-700XWell we advertised some time back locally for images of the largest morels found and so far we have had a few nice submissions but today the largest two, yes two largest morels were found by none other than my own two young morel hunters. Matthew and Michael Bunch both tied for first place with a whopping 9 and 1/4 inch morel each. The two morels were found within ten feet of each other and to date none larger have been submitted.

The two morels found were officially measured both before harvest and after and actually come close to the unofficial 13 inch world record found in Michigan. 9 and 1/4 is actually quite large for a morel here in Tennessee as most average about 3-5 inches in height. There have been stories of larger ones found but to date no one has ever documented one. These two morels are actually the largest morels documented in the state so far. Until someone else comes forward these two young fellows hold both the county and state record. More images will be in the gallery later and we will update this article as we place them.

If you have images of your giant morels or any other images you wish to share, join the site, add them to our gallery or email them to us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

World Record Morel ?

52182-morelThe largest morel reported so far was about 13 inches in height, found in North Adams, Mich. by Henry Brackman, sadly it wasnt documented in a fashion that would prove its validity. There is a photo (left) of it however its true height cant be determined. There have been many impressive photos of large morel mushrooms and many reports of larger ones but to date no one has ever made an actual report. We suspect that due to the secretive nature of most morel hunters they simply dont report them for fear someone will find their honey spot.

Well our very own local Charles Leonard, AKA Snakeman is on the trail of the worlds largest morel. Currently he has last years find dried out and it measures a whopping 10 inches in height. Charles says that if the same mushrooms is up this year and provided no one else finds it, he can expect to bring home a 15 inch high morel. This would definitly put Mr. Leonard in the record books.

Charles  has a vast knowledge of the outdoors and is a member of the Tennessee Outdoorsman crew. He oves to promote outdoors awareness and share with others his information on morels, edible and medicinal plants as well as insects and reptiles. Lets keep a watch on Snakeman and see if he goes into the record books this year. Good luck Charles!
