Camera Review

This is the big dog in the Spypoints mini cam line. This cam is available in their great camo or in a flat black case. Looking at the standard Spypoint cameras and shrink that same look down to 4 ½ X 7 X 3 inch box then you can imagine what this camera looks like. This camera is not cheap $449.00 but is a full featured camera tucked into a mini cam case. Things like view screen (3 inch), solar panel port, sound recording on video, and a whopping 12 MP picture size. Just like its cheaper little brother this is a camera in a box type configuration. The case can be mounted and aimed, and the camera removed and held in your hand for programming and other operations. The programming is joy stick driven and the PIR sensor is knob controlled for distance. The IR array is in appearance the same as the large cameras from this company and has a count of 46. This should provide plenty of down range light. The video mode is a single 640X480 setting, which is the most popular. A couple of extra things are printed on the picture after the time/date. These are moon phase and temperature. There is a USB and TV out ports on the side of the camera near the SD card slot. Internal memory is limited to 32 MB. To power this small camera you will need 6 AA cells or 6 NIMH rechargeable cells to work in conjunction to the solar panel. The low battery indicator is on the view screen. This being a 12 MP camera is a giant over kill for scouting but some folks may find it as being a plus. My take is I would tone it down and select one of the other settings like the 8 MP or the 5MP settings. Probably the 5 MP setting would get the most use. For those who use the multi shot feature this camera will go up to 6 pictures in a row. Delay settings go down to 1 second and up to 30s, 1m, 5m.

This camera slipped into the system out of sequence and we went ahead and did the trigger and sensing tests. We have two other cameras ahead of this camera so it will have to wait its turn. The trigger time for with and without flash came in at 2 and 1.5 seconds respectively while the sensing range was out to 45 feet.

08-07-2009 update: While we are getting some cameras out of the way I will go over some of the fit and feel items that this camera has. Absolutely deluxe, this is one way I can describe the fit and feel. This little camera is feature loaded as it should be for the price that it cost ($450). Items like the sound on video, facilities for rechargeable lithium and solar panel, large view screen (3”), down to 10 second delay), Multi-shot, Adjustable PIR, and of course that miniature size. To get the camera ready for rechargeable battery operation using NiMH/rechargeable AA lithium, there is a small switch behind the second to the last battery that must be pushed toward the top of the camera. For standard alkaline batteries the switch should be pushed toward the bottom of the camera. The rear of the camera has loops that may be use for a Python cable but I am going to have to figure a route for the cable to make it effective. Feet the Python cable right to left through the two loops on the back of the camera and then around the tree and then from the rear through the lock loop on the door and across the front of the camera between the flash and PIR lens, then through the lock portion of the Python (see picture). This requires two trips around the tree so it will only work as long as the Python is long enough or the tree to big. Having that amount of money hanging on a tree un attended would make me come up with some kind of good security. We think that the people over at Custom1enterprises will solve this problem pretty quick once they find out about this camera. The rest of the review will be up to this camera.

08-18-2009 update: We finally made a hole and this camera is now set out in the picture mode. It was very hard to just have this camera waiting for the space but to be fair to the ones that were in line ahead of this camera we had to wait for a slot to put it to work. This is a premium little camera with a world of features. It will take a while to get through everything. It is out there now so we are just going to have to wait a day or so for our first results so we can post some pictures.

08-21-2009 update: Wow, we pulled a card and started through what pictures that we were able to capture. Other than a slight blur that is on moving animals the day color pictures are very sharp clear and have very true color. Most folks would be happy with these results. The night IR pictures are exceptional when the subject is still but has that blur on the moving animals. We did not have any whiteout issues at all so far with this camera. I think that I would personally prefer the bright pictures with a slight blur on movement than dark pictures with out the blur that would require editing. I am very happy but some may need a more perfect picture for their needs. This expensive little jewel has most everything together except that moderate blur issue we found.

08-26-2009 update: A few more days and all we can say is that this camera does everything very good. It is most definitely their best effort yet with the introduction of this costly little camera. If the price was somewhat less this camera would be a lot of competition for all of the higher cost cameras. A bunch more pictures and no white out of other indications of issues other than that slight blur on movement. Very good color and night illumination.

08-30-2009 update: This little camera just kept taking videos and pictures to the tune of 150 movies and 1543 pictures. The batteries lasted about two weeks. Keep in mind it does have an external port for battery hookup for those who want the cam to last longer.
